Congress initiated a requirement for an integrated entry-exit system as part of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996. As part of US VISIT in 2003, they added a requirement for the system to have biometric security technology. Will this finally be the year that Congress paves the way for CBP to get the job done?
As mentioned in the article at the end of this post, the infrastructure required to make this idea a reality is daunting. With over 100 international airports, with some exceeding a quarter million passengers per day, any country wide system of biometric security would have strenuous requirements. In addition, this fails to account for physical border crossing to both Canada and Mexico as well as America’s numerous port entries.
